The Mustard Seed Has Stepped Up to Manage New Shelter Beds in Saskatoon

The Mustard Seed, a Canadian Christian non-profit will be managing the proposed 30 new emergency shelter beds (on the province’s behalf) at the building that formerly housed Fire Hall #5 at 421 Central Avenue in Sutherland.

Although the Sutherland Business Improvement District (SBID) boundary does not include the former fire hall location, we are interested in working with our BID’s businesses, the Sutherland community, City of Saskatoon and Province of Saskatchewan address and meet the challenges and issues faced for those experiencing homelessness.

“The Government of Saskatchewan has made a commitment to develop additional outreach supports in collaboration with community partners, including the Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Fire Department. These supports will further improve safety around emergency shelters and other areas impacted by homelessness, mental health and addictions issues.”

Your Sutherland Business Improvement (SBID) Board of Management strongly encourages you to attend the Public information Sessions that will be held to provide details and answer questions.

Residents and businesses within a 300-metre radius of the proposed Central Avenue site are to be invited to these information sessions, where representatives from the provincial government, the Mustard Seed and the city will be available to answer questions.

Some members of the SBID Board of Management including the Chair, Sheldon Wasylenko (Rayner Agencies), and fellow Board Director, Leanne Priddell (The Medicine Shoppe), along with the SBID’s Executive Director, Lloyd Moker, will continue to meet with as many of the stakeholders involved in the project and commit to sharing information with you as it become available.

City council is expected to receive a report in late February with more information on the proposed shelter.
